West Devon v South Devon
The West of Devon met the South in the first match of the 2015 season at Plympton CC. The pitch and outfield was still wet from the previous days down pour so the toss was vital to win. South fortunately won the toss and put the West into to bat, it was tough conditions early on with the quick bowlers getting some steep bounce, Abraham Kopparambil started batting freely running between the wicket well due to the very slow outfield, at the other end Tobin Barker got a ball which got big on him and was caught at square leg, which seemed to be a regular occurrence as James White, Kian Burns and Abraham Kopparambil (12) all went in the same fashion with the score only on 27. Elliott Hamilton and Adam Talbott (16) both batted well to see off the opening bowlers and put on a partnership of 39 until the South brought on their spin attack. A Heywood took 2-1 from 4.1 overs and H. Retallick took 4-2 from 3 overs as Adam and Elliott where both caught off the spinners, as quickly after this brought on a collapse from the bottom order and the West where all out for 74 in the 24th over.
With the West defending a small target they came out attacking the South, opening bowlers James White and Adam Talbott bowled well but the South batted well hitting the gaps. The West needed a change and turned to the spinners Abraham and Kian Burns, Abraham bowled brilliant lines making the batters play at every ball and picked up a triple wicket maiden which made the game interesting at 60-. The total of 75 then might have seemed to be quite a big ask but the Souths middle order got them over the line in the 17th over.
East Devon v North Devon
A cold grey day greeted the boys as they started their Divisional campaigns at Exmouth CC. Captains Moore and Horler, both to play vital roles in the game, exchanged pleasantries before Moore lost the toss and was invited to have first use of Exmouth’s finest. He proceeded to do so with great relish. At 66 for no loss off 12, the insertion was looking foolhardy. However the East’s spinners slowly exerted some control and return for bowling a tight line and length, forcing the North to head aerial. Opener Hannam was adjudged LBW after a good knock of 16. Moore finally succumbed to a fine running catch by Luke Davies and the East had their man. Runs and partnership continued, albeit at a steadier pace, with Dan Butler contributing a fine 32 and Jack Rutley 19. Max Helston’s tight closing spell proving the highlight of the East’s seam attack. The North’s innings ended on a respectable 157 with the East feeling slightly the happier at tea having pulled the North back from their blistering start.
The East’s openers enjoyed a pleasing start, before a run out, then skipper Moore entering the attack. Fired up, Moore breeched Read’s defence in his second over to gain sweet revenge on his Devon colleague who had earlier tempted him to err. The East then failed to put any partnerships together and were stuttering at 80 for 5. Game in the balance. Enter Cam Kidd. A brutal display of power hitting quickly took the game from the North. Accompanied by East’s skipper and rock, James Horler, a fine unbeaten partnership of 83 took the East home. Both batsmen finished on unbeaten fifties, an excellent demonstration of how to close a game out.
The game was played in an excellent spirit with the all-round improvement in quality clear to see in these well matched and familiar teams. Thank you to umpires, scorers and of course Exmouth CC for allowing the boys to use such a prestigious facility.
West Devon v East Devon
This year the East travelled to the West of Devon to play at Ivybridge CC, due to heavy rain the previous day and night the grass wicket was out of use so it was decided the game was going ahead to be played on the artificial wicket. The outfield still had surface water so when the West won the toss they decided to bowl as the outfield looked as if it would dry by the time their innings came around. The West got off to a good start with the ball, limiting the East to 24 from the first 10 overs with no wickets but some very tight bowling from Hagan-Burt (7-0-22-0) and A Talbott (7-0-25-0). The first wicket of the game came in the 18th over when the score was on 49 from Jake May with a smart catch from Alfie Hagen-Burt. The West continued to bowl very good lines in the hard conditions as the rain was still falling. The 2nd wicket fell when the East were on a score of 62 in the 21st over when James White (5-1-16-1) bowled J Horler (5) with a quicker full delivery. The players had to leave the field as the rain got slightly heavier, the umpires decided to take an early tea to reduce the amount of overs lost for each team. When the players finally went back out onto the field the match was reduced to 40 overs per side. The East went out scoring quicker and finished their innings on 143-5.
The West went out straight away for their innings feeling confident they could chase down the target set. However they didn’t get off to the best start when T Barker was run out first ball of the innings and without facing a ball when there was a mix up with the other opener. This brought J White to the crease, which seemed to spur on Abraham Kopparambil as he took to the bowling but eventually got out stumped for 40 when the score was on 103-1. Next to come in was Alfie Hagan-Burt who went out looking to end the game quickly before the rain started to fall harder, he was caught for 11. At the other end James went about his innings very well, hitting the bad balls to the boundary and brought up his half century. Himself and Adam Talbott won the game for the West in the 37th over, James White finished with a match winning innings on 54 not out.
North Devon v West DevonOn a cold sunny day at Westward Ho North Devon u13s entertained West devon u13s. North won the toss and chose to bowl first on a green top. West started well through Abraham Koperambil and Tobin Barker. West batted aggresivley and ran well between the wickets throughout the innings. Extras was the killer for north contributing 58 to a total of 188 for 6. Pick of batsmen were Abraham, 44, James White , 29 and Adam Talbott , 29. The wickets were shared for North.
The North innings started well with 42-0 on the board from 10 overs. There was no looking back after that as Jack Moore and Ollie Hannam batted with maturiaty, mixing the big shots with quick singles and elegent play. In the end North knocked the runs of with no wickets lost. The partership of 189 unbeaten between Moore and Hannam was a great achievement. West contributed 41 extras to the total. Moore finished on 80 not out and Hannan 58 not out. This means North won by a convinicing 10 wickets.
